How To Build An Online Income Using Google's Adsense Program.

Adsense Quick Tour

The income generating power of the Adsense program is that you don't have to make a regular sale of a product or service, which can be hard enough in many cases. You'll earn by people simply clicking on your ad links. And when you take into account that you can get anywhere from cents to many dollars per click, a decent income by just driving targeted traffic to a web site, could be the outcome. It's smart to go for the high paying keywords. More on this later.

Quote from Google:
..."Google AdSense is the program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website—with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources. AdSense delivers relevant ads that are precisely targeted—on a page-by-page basis—to the content people find on your site. And when you add a Google search box to your site, AdSense delivers relevant ads that are targeted to the Google search results pages generated by your visitors’ search request. More relevant ads means more clicks—and more money for you. Because when users click on an ad, Google pays you."...

Personally, i can confirm that they do pay, within 30 days after any calendar month and with more than $100 in earnings. It's important to read their guidelines, otherwise your web site may not be approved. I.e. if you have web page content with only Adsense ads on it, you may not get approval. They require that you have other options to leave the web page, i.e. an affiliate link.

In this installment, I'll use my own web site

as a case study for the integrated Adsense program. Unfortunately, their policy prevents me from discussing i.e. conversion ratios with you, so this is left out.

Just adding this little java code below (example) to your web page, will dynamically produce relevant content ads, as seen on my index page and other pages. How Adsense determines what your web page content is about, is based on the keywords found in the name of the page itself, in the title of a page, in headlines using the h1 tag, in the first paragraph and more.

So it's important to place the targeted keywords there, to make it easier for Adsense to serve relevant ads. The result, visitors may actually click on these ads, because they saw a text link in their area of interest. Here is where the brilliance of the Adsense program comes in, it's very dynamic.

Based on the preferences set in your account, Adsense will generate this code for you with just a few clicks. Then it can be copied and pasted into a web page, simple as that... ready to make you money with every click, after uploading it to the Internet. How much a click earns you, depends on the ad served. More about this below. Then all you have to do is drive targeted traffic to the web site, to start getting an income from Adsense.

It's smart to build theme based web sites with informative, useful content (search engines loves it) around high paying keywords. By doing a search in Google, be sure there are plenty of AdWord bidders for the keywords or phrases you are targeting, to confirm that there is a market for it.

In order to maximize your AdSense income, you need five things:
1) The right ad format and placement
2) The most valuable keywords to target
3) Lots of targeted content
4) Good traffic from search engines
5) Better statistical reporting than Google currently has

If you want to do your own keyword research, this can be done through the tools available in i.e. AdWords. At miva.com you can do a phrase search and quickly see how much clicks are worth.

Ad Design & Placement

There are several options available in the Adsense account to design the look of the ads. As far as possible, keeping the web page clean, with only relevant informative content, the required minimum links and forms to get a Google approval, would give better performance.

When designing ads, i remove the border, change background color to the same color as on the web page, change ad text to the same color as the text on the web page and also change the color of the ad URLs to the regular blue one, often seen on the Net. People in general are familiar with that color and know it leads to more information, by clicking on these links. Or as an alternative, the URL color can be changed to the dominant URL color, found on the rest of your web page.

For the case study, see how Adsense ads blend in with the rest of the content at:

Let's say we mentally exclude the always exposed Google text logo, would you doubt that it was an ad you saw? If so, then the ad design job is correctly done, in my opinion. Nothing can be done with the logo but the way the rest of the ad is designed, significantly increases click through rates and as a result, increases your Adsense income too.

If i removed the menu side on my own pages, it would probably increase click throughs even more, although the pages are more or less uncluttered in general. But that would damage the purpose of this site. So again, it depends on the priorities.

Naturally, placing ads prominently on a page, should increase exposure and click throughs. But this may also decrease clicks on any affiliate links you may have on the same page. So your strategy may depend on what you are focusing on, for example mainly affiliate or product income, with Adsense revenue as a lower priority source or vice versa. Or maybe your focus is to build your own opt-in mailing list and reap the long term, monetary benefit from it, by following up on your subscribers. Earlier, i have written this Article on how to build an opt-in list quickly and at the same time reduce the cost connected to this process, by using Adsense.

In several of my own sites, i place an Adsense banner at the top of the page, in the Leaderboard format, without border. On other pages/sites i place it right after the headline of the body, in a large rectangle format.  When writing articles, text around a square looking ad on the upper left, gives ok performance. The same, by centering a large triangle between the article title and it's body.

Click Tracking

A crucial part of any successful Adsense campaign is testing and tracking clicks, to find out what ads (on various domains and pages) performs well or not. Tracking features in the Adsense account are limited. That's why i use the Adsense Gold tracking script, which gives far better overview of where clicks etc. are coming from.
